ISSFAL 2014 Congress to offer two exciting, new opportunities for New Investigators

A Message from the President

ISSFAL has a long history of encouraging the careers of new investigators entering the field. For the 5th meeting in a row, we will provide ~ 45 competitively awarded free registrations to students and postdoctoral fellows who have requested these with the submission of their abstracts.

In addition, I’m pleased to report that ISSFAL 2014 offers two exciting new opportunities for new investigators. The first is a chance to compete for a major research award that is supported by DSM (DSM Science and Technology Award Europe 2014).  Please click here to view the announcement for details. If you are currently mentoring a PhD student or had a student finish since early in 2013, consider nominating your student.  The award will be adjudicated in advance of the 2014 ISSFAL Congress and successful competitors will present their research on Monday, June 30.

The second opportunity is an inaugural social event for students and postdoctoral fellows.  Dr. Alex Kitson has arranged an evening event with hors d’oeuvres and drinks on the Lady Patricia, a moored-boat very close to the conference site.  Alex recently completed his PhD with Dr. Ken Stark at the University of Waterloo and is currently doing a postdoctoral fellowship with Dr. Richard Bazinet at the University of Toronto.

In other important news,  Professor Andrew Sinclair from Deakin University, Australia will be the recipient of the Alexander Leaf Award with lecture on Monday, June 30.  Our Early Career Awardee will be Dr. Alex Bartelt, a postdoctoral research fellow at Harvard.  You can read their biographies and more details in the next ISSFAL newsletter.

As I write this, we are 10 hours from closing the abstract submission with over 350 abstracts submitted. I’m sure they are coming in fast and furious today and expecting our highest number of submissions ever.  If you have not been to the website recently (issfal2014.org) please check it out, then register and make your hotel reservation and plans to attend.

I look forward to welcoming all of you to Stockholm this summer!
