"Our skin and the myriad lipids that keep it healthy"
Professor Anna Nicolaou, PhD CChem FRSC Professor of Biological Chemistry | Health & Safety Academic Lead, Division of Pharmacy and Optometry Division of Pharmacy and Optometry, School of Health Sciences and Lydia Becker Institute of Immunology and Inflammation | Faculty of Biology, Medicine and Health The University of Manchester Skin depends on a unique profile of lipids that are necessary for the correct structure and function of the epidermal barrier, management of cellular communications and regulation of cutaneous homeostasis. Changes in skin lipids have severe consequences for skin health and underpin the development inflammatory skin conditions. Using targeted lipidomics together with in vitro and clinical studies, we have investigated the prevalence and role of eicosanoids, endocannabinoids and ceramides on human skin, and assessed the impact of systemic n-3PUFA supplementation. Our data suggest that elucidating the network of cutaneous bioactive lipids can support the development of biomarkers and diagnostics, and lead to the identification therapeutic targets for inflammatory skin disease. |
